Running Record Pt. 4

Today I gave Jackson another running record when I was in the classroom. When I gave Jackson his running record, he read 51 words in 1:00 minute. He also read the entire passage, which was 245 words, within 5 minutes and 6 seconds. Compared to when I gave Jackson his first running record, this is an improvement. His reading comprehension and fluency is improving, as well as his self confidence. There weren't any students that walked by today because Ms. Swan was working with him on the carpet so he wasn't able to be distracted or startled today either. There was one point where Jackson completely skipped a line in the middle of the story so Jackson actually only read 239 words. This is still an improvement for Jackson. I am going to bring in a tracer next week and have Jackson use it at the beginning of the story and throughout so he doesn't end up skipping another line.

I noticed in this running record that Jackson kept changing simple words within the text. The words he would change would be me to him or is to was. The sentence still made sense when he changed these words he would just start to rush ahead and then mix up sight words. He also changed the word similar to smaller. They sound similary but mean two different things. The sentence still made sense with this word change but shows that he was rushing because Jackson didn't heistate when he said the word. Jackson also tended to struggle with words that had more than one syllable. He had trouble with the words sparrow and tradition. He had to sound out the words and then was able to figure out what they said and their meaning.

After the story was over, Jackson and I talked about what he does when the tooth fairy comes after he loses a tooth. This was because the story was about a child writing to a pen pal from a different country about losing tooth and their traditions. I thought that we had a nice conversation because it allowed us to get to know each other a little more and I want Jackson to be comfortable around me. I don't want him to be nervous and think that whenever he sees me, he's going to be tested on something new each time.
