Reading Anchor Standard 4: meaning of words and phrases

Strand: language standards

Standards: interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone.

 

Focuses:

  • author's choice of words and phrases

  • understanding words in context and diction

  • students need to interpret and analyze author's words and how they use the word to bring meaning

 

Diction: an author's choice of words and use of style that helps readers determine the message

Denotation: dictionary def of a word

Connotation: interpreted def of a word

Domain specific words: vocab relevant to content area

 

5 college reading skills within standard:

1. ability to interpret word and phrases used in a test

2. determine technical meanings

3. determine connotative meanings

4. ability to determine figurative meanings

5. analyze how word choices determine meaning or tone

 

- vocabulary is important in order to read and write

Analyze Meaning or Tone: DIDLS

D = diction

I = imagery - words that appeal to senses

D = details - helps readers focus on what's important

L = language - overall types

S = syntax - use of sentence structure

 

4 Main Skill Areas:

1. asking and answering questions about words

2. words and phrases that suggest feelies

3. general academic and domain specific words

4. figurative language

 

Morphemic Analysis - determining the meaning of part of a word to figure out the meaning of the whole word affixes, suffixes, and prefixes. roots.

five strategies:

1. segments and build with morphemes

2. use affix and root meanings

3. use morphemes to improve spelling

4. segment compound words and combing to create common compound words

5. identify cognates to support ELL's

K: draw two - write the word that has the two meanings and then draw a picture that shows both meanings below

1: multiple meaning match up - they get 3 triangles, the top part has the vocab word, the bottom two have the definitions of the words and the student has to match them from a bunch of other triangles

2: mix and combine - prepares cards with words and coordinating parts of speech and the student must match the words with the proper part and then record it. also have sentences where the student fills in the correct word in blank sentences

3: word, picture, write - students get a word with multiple meanings they must determine. then they divide their paper in half and draw picture of the meaning on each side. then they write sentences to correlate the picture with the meaning.

4: multiple meaning words task cards - teacher prints off task cards and then kids walk around the room. they must pair up with someone and then ask their partner the question on the card, their partner will use context clues to answer the questions and then ask the first person the question from their card. cycle can be prepared.

5: nonsense - students have a worksheet with sentences that confuse the two meanings of a word. they must identify what the mix up is and what the two meanings are for each word sentences.
