CCSS Chapter 13:

Standard 7: integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats, including visually and quantitatively as well in words.

  • students need to be presented info in diverse media and in varied forms

  • need to have the ability to interpret and analyze stories in any format

  • need a knowledge of different sources in order to use and understand them

What each grade should know: informational vs. literature:

  • k-1st: learn to describe the relationship between images and the story text in which they appear

  • 2nd-3rd: learn to use those images and details in a story to comprehend it

  • 4th: look for connections between different forms of a story, such as written or oral presentation

  • 5th: analyze the effectiveness of visual and multimedia elements in text or multimedia of the same content

Skills students should be learning:

Learning to use multiple sources:

  • students need to understand different sources, both print and digital, and how to use them. this is something all grades can be learning.

  • the students ask themselves questions: who wrote this and what credentials do they have? why was it written? when was it written? does it help my needs? is it organized? to do list for the future. (wwwdot)

Interpreting images and details in a story - students can write out a story by looking at a series of pictures because pictures display the five narrative elements (characters, setting, problem, attempts to resolve, resolution).

Bookmark Technique: focuses on the student comprehending what they are reading. 4 bookmarks to fill out:

  1. write what you think is the most interesting

  2. write what you thought was confusing

  3. write a word you think the whole class needs to discuss

  4. reference a piece of media that helped you understand the story and explain how

Connection to ELA Standards for Literature:

  • reading standard 9 - compare and contrast two or more versions of a story and ask kids to compare and contrast from a written and a multimedia version

  • writing standard 1 - writing an opinion about a topic and supporting their points of view with information from the text and ask students to read/view a story in multiple forms and write their opinion on which was the most effective

Connections to ELA Standards for Informational Text:

  • reading standard 6: pov - encourage students to examine multimedia elements in addition to print to help them analyze the author's pov

  • writing standard 7: participating in brief research projects - when doing research projects teach students to use a variety of sources and integrate that info in multimedia

Activities:

K - use a wordless book and start telling the students the story from the first page and then have the students write about what happens next based on the pictures in the books. If students are struggling you can use questions cards to prompt their thinking and wondering about the text.

1st - students read a text without pictures and then are prompted to create the story and retell the story with just pictures. Differentiation: students can work in pairs or groups for this assignment. the student can receive the first scene or piece to the story that’s already drawn and then go from there. they can describe what they would have drawn on the paper.

2nd - students are given an informational topic to research and are taught how to research in multiple ways. Students then create a national geographic article to teach others about their topic, including title, pictures with captions and text.

3rd - show a trailer or a fake picture of something that is common and ask the students how the mood was different and what made it that way. Then have groups assignment to books and have them determine the mood and then they will choose a different mood to tell the same story from. For each mood write a paragraph and create a picture to portray the mood in the story

4th - the class will read the wizard of oz together and they will be introduced to the play of the same story as well. Each student will have their own role and work in groups to recreate the play. Students will create their own costumes and sets based on the cues in the story. For those that can’t read, they can watch the movie and then analyze a picture from each scene and talk about what makes up that scene and how they would reenact that.

5th - internet inquiry: (students that are at a lower reading level can be given a website with broad information and that is simple compared to information on the NASA website.)

  1. generate research questions about a theme or topic being studied

  2. search for responses to the research questions on the internet

  3. analyze the information found online

  4. choose a mode to present the findings

  5. share the results with the whole class
