Understanding Sociopolitcs in Schools:

  • It is rare for decisions made about education to be neutral

  • Decisions involve social, politcal & culture

  • Identify, difference, power, priviledge: these are what determines how people see the world

  • Multicultural education is inclusive and for students despite their race, gender etc

  • Teachers are perceived as villains because they lower expectations for students on accident and they can't be blamed for this

  • They want to see their students succeed

  • Public education is good because it gives students the chance to improve their lives

  • To achieve goals of multicultural education you need equality, a high education and allow kids to be in society

I felt the text was thought provoking because I asked myself questions as I read and tried seeing things from different perspectives. It had really good points and I learned more about the subject than I had known before, but the way the text was worded was hard to get past. The text referred to itself, the content and why they chose it very often. It was hard to get over and I feel it took away from the content and what I could have focused on.

What if I don't agree with the way my administrators are running things regarding out of country students learning English and the curriculum because they aren't allowing them to learn about their own culture?

  • Some immigrant students aren't allowed to speak in their native language and learn about their cultures history and art because of policies

  • 11 million kids speak a different language at home

  • 8 million of them spoke Spanish

  • Multiculturalism challenges the status quo, encourages people to voice their opinions, and helped bring in new ideas of pedagogy

  • People say education needs to go back to the basics

  • People want tradition rather than multiculturalism because we were unified before but we weren't

  • People tend to vote for those that support education
