Running Record Pt. 3

Today in class I gave Jackson his 3rd running record. After the class was done with OG, they all had snack so Tia and I pulled Jackson and Max back to perform our running records. We ran out of time at the end of the class so we were not able to give Max his running record because Ms. Swan was reading aloud to the entire class and the students had gotten really into the book.

I was excited to give Jackson this running record and he was excited for this running record because today I had him read a passage from The Diary of a Whimpy Kid: Cabin Fever. Jackson was immediatley interested in what I had planned for him and didn't seem to mind that he was reading something while eating his snack.

This time when reading the passage, Jackson read 54 words in one minute and it took him 4 minutes and 20 seconds to read a total of 150 words. The last two running records that I performed on Jackson he had only read 45 words in a minute. I noticed that he got stuck on less words with this text but he added and changed words more frequently than he has in the past. He changed the word no to not and most to month. He also omitted the word on at one point. Jackson also struggled with words that are not proper words. For example, Jackson struggled with the word gonna and hadn't. Hadn't is a contraction but it is closer to slang, as well as the word gonna, and I noticed that Jackson struggled with these words. This shows me that he has some trouble with social language which could be a result from him being shy and not talking to many people. Also, the larger words stumped Jackson. He had trouble saying celebrate, category and between. Jackson ended up chopping up the words into 2 words so this tells me that he struggles with words that consist of more than 1 syllable.

I did notice though that Jackson stopped reading all together when one of his classmates came up behind him and was watching him. This showed me that Jackson does get very self conscious when it comes to reading. I ended up asking the student if they could leave so Jackson could finish reading the passage without feeling like he was being watched. This helped him immediatley and his rate and accuracy picked back up, improving his fluency.
